Why we prioritize continuous learning at Hologram
Here at Hologram we're always talking about growth. Growing our cellular coverage. Growing our headcount, our IoT knowledge, our connections. Early on in the company's life, we also committed to another area of growth: Personal growth, for all Hologrammers.
In an effort to create a culture of continuous learning and personal growth, we created the Continuous Learning benefit. Through this benefit, Hologram employees can take advantage of a few things:
- A free Kindle Paperwhite
- All the books you want — eBooks, physical books, audiobooks, etc.
- Subscriptions to newspapers, magazines, etc.
The goal of this benefit is to inspire growth and progress—not force it. To facilitate continued learning and a growth mindset.
Teammates are welcome to focus on business books if they like, but this benefit includes ALL reading. Whether you're learning about new sales strategies, the lineage of Alexander Hamilton, or how to make a really great sourdough—it all fits under the scope of continuous learning. Here's an incomplete list of some of the books our team is reading right now.
What we're currently reading:
- The Splendid & The Vile by Erik Larson
- The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah
- White Flight by Kevin M. Kruse
- The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Anderson
- The Biggest Bluff by Maria Konnikova
- Coming About: Life in the Balance by Mario Dell'Olio
- Nothing Like I Imagined by Mindy Kaling
- Speak, Okinawa by Elizabeth Miki Brina
- Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: Stories by Alice Munro
- On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
- The Hard Thing about Hard Things by Ben Horowitz
Supporting our team to learn and grow in this way has led to other areas of continuous learning — we now have an employee-driven monthly book club (Current book: The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth Book 1 by N. K. Jemisin) and active Slack channels devoted to sharing reading recommendations and podcast recommendations. Continuous learning has become a part of Hologram’s culture.
According to this article from Inc., reading raises your intelligence, makes you happier with yourself and your life, and protects your memory. That means the "perks" offered by our Continuous Learning benefit are an actual health benefit.
And while our Continuous Learning benefit is focused on our teammates, everyone wins. We believe employees who are healthy and growing will help us build a better, more innovative and creative Hologram.
